Mile 4005

This morning we start with some sunshine above us and temperatures forecasted to be in the upper 80's.  So we leave Campbellton, NB, find Rt-11 and head South.  We have slightly changed our plan and have targeted for today Prince Edward Island, or P.E.I. in short.  But first we follow the Restigouche River outflow on the South side, then circle the Nepisiguit Bay.  We stop in Bathurst, NB for our morning coffee and follow the coast to Grande-Anse, NB before making another stop in Bertrand, NB at the Historic Acadian Village Historic Site.  Unfortunately the village is still closed for another two weeks, so we can only walk the park which is not as much fun as when the village would be alive.  We move on, passing some more smaller bays before picking up Rt-113 to bring us out to Shippagan, NB and then to Lameque Island and finally to Miscou Island.  Temperatures out here have dropped to about 60 degree, and there is a strong wind blowing.  We stop at the Miscou Island Lighthouse at Birche Point, get a nose full of the sea breeze, and then we head back the way we came.  We see in this part of New Brunswick many houses flying the tricolour flag of France with a golden start in the blue field.  It is the flag of the Acadian community of Canada, and a reminder to their heritage and devotion, and adherence of the Acadians to the Roman Catholic Church and the role of the Church in the history of Acadia (also see yesterdays entry about "The Grand Derangement").  We pick up a little speed as the island hopping has cost us some time, return to Rt-11 and cross the Miramichi River.  From there we continue to St. Louis de-Kent the city from where Father Marcel-Francois Richard the designer of the Acadian flag came, to continue to Shediac, NB to turn on the Rt-15 and Rt-16 a bit later to bring us over the Confederation Bridge to P.E.I.  We arrive late at the Borden/Summerside KOA campsite, the best campsite of all campsites we have seen over the past four weeks (gosh how time flies).

Dinner is quick with the leftovers from the day before, and we even find some time to run two machines of laundry.  Tomorrow is suppose to be a rain day, perhaps it will be reading a book again, we'll see.
