Mile 5172

This morning we leave Rock Harbour, NL and the Bonne Bay with very gray clouds above us and the occasional sprinkle of rain.  We trace our way back as it is the case here in Newfoundland quite often, the way to is the way out.  We stop today at the Canada Parks Information Center at Rocky Harbor Pond to get our Parks Passes and then follow the Viking Trail again back to TCH-1.  Along the way we decide to make a run on the West Arm of the bay to Woody Point, NL and turn into Rt-431.  The run follows to opposite side we came in yesterday and gives us a new view of the bay and the mountains we saw with the snow fields and cloud caps.  We go back, pick up TCH-1 at Deer Lake, NL and head North along Sandy Lake and Birchy Lake to make our way to the Baie Verte Peninsula.  We turn onto Rt-410 (Dorset Trail) near Sheppardville, NL and from here our end point is Fleur de Lys, NL in hopes to see some (or at least one) icebergs.  But all we get is a drop in temperature to about 34F feeling more like 26F and a stiff breeze to our face.  But the coastal trail leads to a nice view point, so the weather didn't matter too much.  We decide to try our luck again in La Scie, NL, so once again we need to trace our way back on Rt-410 to pick up Rt-414 to bring us to the next bay (La Scie Harbour).  We leave the old Dorset Soapstone Quarry, a National Historic Site, the oldest known mining site in this area.  The Dorset Soapstone Quarry is unique in Canada as a Pre-Inuit Soapstone Quarry.  But there is also near Baie Verte, NL a lesser nice site to view, the Baie Verte Asbestos Mine, now abandoned and a reminder of the destruction we have done and still do to our nature.  Soon we find Rt-414 and make a run to Fleur de Lys, NL.  The town is as so many we have seen thus far just a small fishing village, some grocery shops, a gas station, some small businesses, a harbour.  But we find our first iceberg, lodged against the entrance of the harbour and getting pounded by the unrolling waves.  We hike the Caplin Cove Trail and see another iceberg floating by further out at sea.  It's freezing cold out here, and the wind is blowing at us from every direction on the trail.  We decide to call it the day and retrieve to the Fishers Inn & Hospitality Home here in La Scie.
